Activities and things to see in the Papagayo region.

The Papagayo region is rich with amazing views, natural wonders to explore, and captivating activites in which to participate.  The Costa Rican government has taken special interest in this region, and preserves 70% of the land mass as natural forest void of development.  They encourage tourism to the area, however, and have taken particular pains to ensure that the roads are well-maintained and widespread.  Eco-tourism and exploration of the natural beauty of this area is welcome, but in addition there are many other activities to enjoy here including:

  • Surfing - this area is a hub for expeditions to two of the most famous surf spots in Costa Rica, Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point.  Also, many of the beaches strung along the Gulf of Papagayo have surfable breaks.
  • Deep Sea Fishing - the sheltered Gulf of Papagayo is world famous for its fishing, where one can land tuna, marlin, and sailfish.
  • Snorkeling/Scuba Diving - the protected Gulf of Papagayo houses a diverse marine ecosystem as well, explore the Catalina Islands and Pelontas Islands to see coral reefs, sea turtles, and hundreds of colorful fish.
  • Boat Cruising - leisurely sail around this sheltered gulf to see the natural beauty from another angle and appreciate the granduer of the peninsula.
  • White Water Rafting - the many rivers traversing the unspoiled Papagayo Peninsula offer white water rapids, be it lazy river or intense.
  • Golf - one can find a beautiful 18 hole signature gold course designed by Arnold Palmer, and coming soon is another 18 hole signature course designed by Jack Nicklaus.
